The critical distinction between reckless and aggressive driving is that to be considered a reckless driver, you have to engage in unsafe behavior. On the other hand, aggressive driving involves dangerous conduct to harass or scare other drivers on the road. It is similar to road rage. If you are injured in a car accident in Seattle due to reckless or aggressive driving, consult an attorney to discuss your legal options regarding compensation.

Both reckless and aggressive driving are misdemeanors, implying that they are against the law. The person found guilty of such misconduct will be sanctioned with criminal charges.

In order to understand the difference, it is essential to understand each of them in detail.

Reckless Driving

Reckless driving includes common misbehaviors by drivers, such as driving at extreme speeds or driving in a way that is unsuitable for the present road conditions. Reckless acts like passing on grades or curves, passing stopped school buses, or abreast vehicles are also involved. Additionally, reckless driving falls under unsafe driving if the driver fails to yield or use proper signals while driving. Drivers who engage in drag racing are also deemed reckless. They are fined under traffic laws depending on the severity of damage caused by them.

Reckless driving results in several accidents that can significantly damage the victim physically and emotionally. It also leads to property damage as well as loss of life.

Aggressive Driving

On the other hand, aggressive drivers are known for engaging in behaviors that intend to cause intimidation, harassment, injury, or obstruction to other drivers on the road. Those behaviors include ignorance of traffic signals or signs, speeding vehicles, and driving in the wrong lane or away from the designated area.

Acts such as failure to yield, abruptly stopping on highways, and tailgating are considered a type of misconduct that can hamper the safety of other motorists on the road. Excessive honking, flashing headlights, intentionally driving too slowly, or other annoying acts are considered aggressive driving. This type of behavior is intended to provoke other drivers.

Furthermore, aggressive driving is instigated by heavy traffic and delays, which causes drivers to get late, so they respond to the stress by speeding and tailgating as a retaliatory action.

Anonymity also plays a significant role in aggressive driving as they have the mindset that they will never see the driver again so that they can behave ignorantly without any fear or regard for other people’s safety.
