Angry Birds Set To Reach Movie Theaters In 2016

No longer content at just dominating the smart phone and tablet world of apps, the owners of the Angry Birds gaming franchise have revealed that an Angry Birds movie will be released in movie theaters in 2016.

Rovio Entertainment, the creators of Angry Birds, announced earlier today that an Angry Birds feature film is in the works, and is scheduled to be released in Theaters worldwide in the summer of 2016.

Announcing the movie plans Rovio Entertainment stated: “Angry Birds: The Movie” (as we’re calling it for the moment) will be a computer-generated/animated feature film and, yes, it will be in 3D.”

The Finnish-based company has revealed that they plan to fully finance the movie, and will therefore maintain full creative control.

John Cohen, the producer of hit animated movie ‘Despicable Me’ has been brought on board the Angry Birds movie project, with David Maisal, the former chairman of Marvel Studios set to be executive producer.

Speaking of having the pair on board the movie, Mikael Hed, the CEO of Rovio Entertainment stated: “John’s an exceptionally talented producer, and we’re delighted to have him join the flock. With John’s hands-on producer background and David’s expertise in establishing and running his own successful studio, these two are the dream team for making a movie outside the studio system.”

At the moment details of the movie plot have been kept a tight secret, causing many to speculate about how Rovio can turn a bunch of flightless birds and stubborn pigs into a successful story.

Converting video games into movies has proved to be difficult in the past, with the likes of the Super Mario Bros, failing to achieve any substantial success. However, if anybody can make the transition from the gaming world to the movie world work then maybe it could be Rovio.

Since the Angry Birds gaming app was launched on smartphones three years ago, Rovio’s puzzle-based game has received over 1 billion downloads. As long as the app maintains its incredible success over the next few years, then there is sure to be a large amount of interest in the movie when it is released in 2016.

The film is likely to see further Angry Birds spin-off games released. Earlier this years Rovio released a crossover Angry Birds Star Wars game that has already proven to be a hit.
