Kentucky Derby Favorite: Weir and Lipinski Arrive in Louisville

Kentucky Derby favorite California Chrome won’t be the only fabulous and shiny presence at the race. NBC TV, the US broadcast home for the Kentucky Derby, is hoping to capitalize on the large female audience for the race and will devote first of three hours of Derby coverage to entertainment and fashion. They’ve found a perfect team to host that part of the broadcast–former figure skaters and 2014 Sochi Olympic phenoms Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski. Weir and Lipinski arrived in Louisville on Thursday night and are all set to go for Saturday:

Weir and Lipiniski were the breakout on air talent of the Winter Olympics and provided a welcome relief from all of the tiresome ‘old school’ broadcasters like sloth eyed Bob Costas. They hope to appeals to the large percentage of female Kentucky Derby viewers. Demographic data suggests that roughly half of all Kentucky Derby viewers are female. The only event that attracts a higher percentage of female viewers is the Olympic Games. For her part, Lipiniski is excited about the new challenge:

“I mean, this is Kentucky’s time to shine. … It’s their cultural event of the year,” Weir said earlier this week, according to USA Today. “It’s their big moment where everyone has focused their eyes on Louisville. I think it’s the same as New York during fashion week. New York is always fashionable, but New York fashion week is when you really bring it. … So it’s very much the same, it’s just the Kentucky version.”

Lipinski talked about how her partnership with Weir came about:

“We’ve always loved loud fashion and sort of bonded over it. The whole Olympics experience was a bit of a surprise. We came in and were focused on doing a good job as rookies. But we’re young and we like to have fun. The fashion was specifically for us every day and it was like, ‘Oh, people are watching. This is fun.’”

This makes one of the Kentucky Derby highlights the clothing choice of Johnny Weir:

“We’ve grown up as entertainers, and going out the door, what you’re wearing is often the loudest statement you can make.”

Lipinski is excited about Weir’s ‘Derby hat’ which will reportedly feature a Pegasus theme:

“Oh my God, he’s going to be my crazy bird.”

The Kentucky Derby will take place on Saturday, May 3 from Louisville’s Churchill Downs race track.
