Horse racing often gets a bad rap for not doing anything to attract a younger audience. The Breeders’ Cup is trying to change that and as part of that is looking to make the two days of races more accessible to mobile users. Earlier this week they launched applications for the iPhone and iPad that will bring the races and information about them to more people than ever before.
The official 2012 Breeders’ Cup app will allow users to watch all 15 races free of charge. In addition, radio coverage will also be available in partnership with the Horse Racing Radio Network (HRRN). With over $25 million in purses, the Breeders’ Cup is considered the ‘Super Bowl of Horse Racing’ by horsemen and racing enthusiasts alike. Breeders’ Cup bets are also a big component of the event and the two days of competition are second only to the Kentucky Derby in significance to ‘recreational’ handicappers.
Although the application won’t offer updated Breeders’ Cup odds for 2012 race it will provide other wagering information. It will provide a tutorial on horse racing betting for beginners and feature a directory of simulcasting locations nationwide where players can wager on the event.
Other features will include profiles of the major contenders in each race, track information, a virtual racing program and access to the Breeders’ Cup Twitter feed. Justin McDonald, Sr. Director, Marketing and Digital Media for the Breeders’ Cup is rightfully proud of the multimedia experience the application will provide:
“We continue to enhance and evolve the app to provide our fans with the best possible experience surrounding the World Championships. With two days of live video and radio streaming and sixteen sections of related content, this is our most robust app yet.”
This is the third year that an official Breeders’ Cup application has been available. It was launched for the first time for 2010 World Championships and has been downloaded more than 75,000 times by horse racing enthusiasts in over 75 countries for the iOS platform that powers iPad and iPhone devices. The 2012 Official Breeders’ Cup app was developed by Prolific Interactive and is available now in the Apple App Store.
